Chelsea attempts to sign the 24-year-old Serie A star for £30m this summer

According to Italian media reports, Chelsea is trying to sign Lazio centre-back Mario Sheila for £30 million this summer. The Blues are eager to strengthen their rankings in the transfer window as they will return to the Champions League for the first time after 2022.

The Courier reported that Lazio had received a offer from Chelsea to the Spanish defender, but immediately refused. The 24-year-old has attracted interest from several clubs, including Tottenham, Bournemouth and Paris Saint-Germain, and Lazio hopes to keep him.

Serie A team is said to be ready to hear a offer of around £50 million to obtain the former Real Madrid defender, who is one of their valuable assets. His outstanding performance earlier this year earned him the first invitation to the Spanish national team, but he did not make his debut.

Chelsea have been active in the transfer market this summer, signing Liam Delapp, Dario Essugo and Mamadu Saar. They hope to sign another centre-back, whose attempt to sign Dean Wheelson from Bournemouth last month failed.

Mario Sheila joined Lazio for £5 million, after he twice represented Real Madrid in the 2021-22 season. The defender made 43 appearances for the Serie A team, helping the team finish seventh in the 2024-25 season and reach the UEFA Cup quarterfinals.

Enzo Maresca's team ended the 2024-25 season in an encouraging way, eager to consolidate their performance by bringing in quality players. In addition to targeting Sheila, they are also looking for attackers and a new goalkeeper in the market.

Five Chelsea stars missed the training for the opening game of the Club World Cup

Chelsea's open training before the first game of the Club World Cup, several stars were absent. The Blues will face the Major League Soccer Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) in the Group B opener on Monday, June 16.

Reporter Kieran Gill watched the open meeting and he reported that registered quartets Christopher Nkunku, Aaron Anselmino, Mark Giyou and Josh Archimpon did not participate in the training. Also absent were 18-year-old midfielder Paz, who will train with the team before loaning to Strasbourg.

Enzo Maresca's team will face Brazil's Flamenco and Tunisia's Esperance for the last 16 spots in the rest of the group stage. He hopes his key players will play healthy as part of their preseason plan ahead of the 2025-26 season.
