The Kings may sign Westbrook to form a strong backcourt combo with LaVine
According to Nico Martinez, a contributor to US sports media F/W. The NBA offseason has just begun and the Sacramento Kings have some major plans for improvement. After some big deals, the Kings need a point guard, and recent reports from inside the organization say they can seek Russell Westbrook to fill the vacancy. “Free players Teus Jones and Russell Westbrook are also options that the Kings are considering,” wrote Sam Amick of The Athletic. "Free players officially start at 6 p.m. Eastern Conference Monday. However, in addition to the vacancy of point guards, league sources said the Kings are open to business as they discuss the possibilities with their roster." The Kings are still struggling to find their own way out after a series of disappointing seasons. Despite their initial success under Fox and Sabonis, they failed to make the long playoff journey, and the team decided to wipe the slabs by trading Fox and parting ways with their long-time coach McBrown. Entering next season, the Kings hope to compete with Raven, DeRozan and Sabonis, but they need a suitable point guard to keep up with the fierce competition. In a slightly weak free agent, the Kings have limited options, but not only is Westbrook an affordable option, but he has the potential to raise their cap. The nine-time All-Star is a future Hall of Famer, averaging 21.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists in his career and shooting 443.9% from the field. As the 2-time scoring champion, 9-time NBA player and former MVP, Westbrook has proven himself to be one of the elite superstars, but he has declined very quickly over the years. Westbrook has been on the decline since leaving the Thunder in 2019, including his failures with the Rockets, Wizards, Lakers and Clippers. In his last stop, the Nuggets, the entire front desk disagrees over his role in Michael Malone's rotation. Now, he will reject his $3.5 million player option and join the 2025 free agent class at the age of 36. At this stage of his career, Westbrook's future remains uncertain, but the Kings believe he can help them win next season's game. After averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists in the 2024-25 season, Russ has something left and he can still feel his impact on the floor after 17 years in the NBA. While he may not be the same as he used to be, Westbrook's skills as a scorer, ball handler and the core of the organization should make him a great addition to the Kings. At least, he will let them play in the West in the lineup with Raven, DeRozan, Murray and Sabonis. After finishing ninth in the standings last season, the Kings need a spark, and Westbrook can bring sparks and more with his identity as a leader, veteran and ultimate contender. While he is expected to have multiple suitors this summer, he will be in direct control of the next landing point and there will be a lot of gains in joining the Kings, and he may start with a competitive team.
